Mr. James Nii Addo
Senior Counsel
James Addo is an experienced litigator who has represented clients before all the courts of Ghana, with particular expertise in commercial and corporate litigation. He has regularly appeared before the Commercial Court of Ghana since its inception in 2004 and has extensive knowledge of the practice and procedures of that court. He also has experience handling admiralty actions valued at over $10 million.
Mr. Addo is skilled in drafting and reviewing commercial and corporate agreements for corporate and state enterprises in the real estate, banking, and retail industries. He has represented institutions such as the Social Security and National Insurance Trust in benefits claims, the National Communications Authority in license suspension matters, and Barclays Bank of Ghana in labor disputes. He has also handled litigation for Mechanical Lloyd, Dufry, and Ghana Tourist Development Company before various courts in Ghana.
In addition to his work in private practice, Mr. Addo worked in the legal department of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority from 2002 to 2003, where he reviewed and drafted commercial agreements.
He has experience in the complex area of conveyancing within Ghana’s unique customary and statutory land tenure system. He advises investors and corporations on acquiring land interests. His expertise also includes the incorporation and registration of companies, partnerships, and sole proprietorships. He has advised and assisted in setting up corporate entities for foreign investment and in obtaining work and resident permits under the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act and through the Immigration Service.
Before entering private practice, Mr. Addo completed his National Service in an administrative role at the Ministry of Works and Housing and as a Physical Education Assistant from 1995 to 1997.
He has also provided pro bono legal assistance to unrepresented defendants in criminal cases.
Mr. Addo was admitted to practice law in Ghana in 2002.
